What happens if it starts to rain while the oven is at 1000+ degrees? Will the bricks blow up? Does the oven need to have some form of roof overhead?

As described, it's a fair weather oven. To keep it dry when it's cold, you could throw a tarp over it. But if you are in a rainy area or expect to use it when it may rain, then it should have a proper roof over it.

Rain on a hot oven may well smite some of the bricks.

I have built mine underneath a deck in order to keep the oven dry. I then installed a closed circuit video camera that displays the image on a television located in my kitchen. This way I can keep an eye on the oven while I am making the pizza. It works great!

This adds an extension to windows where you can right click one or more photos and resize them from the menu that pops up.

Hey guys, new guy here. I am super excited about this oven but have a small question.

Is there any safety concern with the clay brick? Is there anything in the brick that may give off fumes, etc.?

I would assume not but just checking so the wife will get off my back

I know of no caustic fumes given off by the bricks. I use this oven on a weekly basis and have had no issues.

I'm curious, if flat ceilings make great pizzas, why do Neapolitan oven builders go through such trouble to make rounded domes? What's a dome bringing to the table exactly?

Pizza ovens are domed for the same reason an Igloo is domed. The structure stands up by itself due to the shape. The same reason bridges are made in the shape of an arc. It is a brilliant use of natural compression forces. No other materials are required other than the bricks themselves.

Wow ... I'm just getting amazingly interested in building one of these. I would like to integrate a chimney, but can't quite make out the method used on the earlier post. What if a person just left out two bricks when filling in the angle iron for the ceiling. Then, as you added the next two courses, just leave the opening above that hole. I think a person could even make a bit of a slot for a piece of sheet metal to slide in horizontally from the front to act as a sort of damper. Thoughts from anybody on this?

Also, I think I would stack the cinder blocks in a square shape so that I could stagger the joints on the way up to give them more strength. Then a center wall would also go in to provide support for the 2x2' pavers.

I've quickly evolved my plan into using landscaping blocks as my building material. I went to Menard's website just to check things out and they had a "projects" page with some amazing ideas. Obviously WAY WAY fancier that I'm thinking of, but I think a person could make something fairly simple and still look real nice: http://www.midwestmanufacturing.com/MidwestManufacturing/projectIdeas.do?id=97 I figure to build it and test it for a while. Then, once I'm pretty happy with everything, come back in with some landscape adhesive (maybe high temp adhesive for around the firebox) and make it more permanent if I desire.

I have a couple spots I'm thinking of in my yard. One is under my deck, which is 10 feet high. But, I'm somewhat concerned about it being a potential fire hazard. Mainly, if any hot embers managed to fly up the chimney and lodge in the deck or the house siding. Are there "rules of thumb" for how far away from the house one of these should go? Or, do people cover the top of the chimney with some sort of cap or screen to prevent hot embers from flying up?

I guess what I'm envisioning here is if I could use this build in the back of a small trailer to use for a mobile catering biz. Just small time stuff, (farmers markets, fairs, etc) Do the cinder blocks of the base get extremely hot? The cogs are turnin'...

What source are y'all using for the 2 foot pavers? I have called Lowes, Home Depot, and several local masonry and landscape supply places and nobody carries bigger than a 16". I suppose we can add another row of blocks and make it 3x3 of the 16" square pavers, but I like the stability of a smaller number of larger pavers.
