I'm looking to purchase an accurate scale (with tare function) for my kitchen. I'd like to purchase something low profile as I don't have a ton of counter space. Does anyone own a scale that they love? Please advise.

If you are in Canada,

try a place called Canada Weigh..... they make VERY accurate scales, mine is accurate to 1 gram !
and yes, all have the "TARE" feature, and many have hold features also.

They sell amazing amounts of scales. I don't know if they ship to the States, but I bet they do.

The other good thing is your American dollar will go a longer way up here.

Thanks, Mark. Great website but unfortunately they only ship to Canadian addresses and I live in the Southern US. Do you own a scale? And if so, how accurate is yours? Is accuracy of 0.1 oz (1.0g) good enough or do I need something that is accurate to 0.02 oz (0.5g)?

You have SO many online cooking stores, - remember that the population of California alone is larger than the entire country of Canada, yes really is true ! .... so we have very few online stores here for that stuff.

I have 2 scales. One is a new one from that website and is accurate to 1 gram ! ... that is AMAZING !, nobody needs
that in reality, but I use it for brewing and hops are very very light, so it's great for us homebrewers.

If you are baking, 1 gram accuracy is overkill, many scales are accurate to 5 grams ( I don't know what that is in oz... )

anyway you will find these scales all over the place, even Wal-Mart I'm sure, or a cooking store in the local mall. However mall stores usually
have higher prices to pay costs of renting mall space, so beware of that.

Cooking.com is not the only store, so do a google search on electronic kitchen scales

I looked around quite a bit before getting a scale. Ended up with a Myweigh 7001dx. http://www.myweigh.com/mediumscales_3001.html

Very inexpensive comparitively, and lots of unique features - though not as futuristic looking.

Got a good review from scale magazine at http://www.digitalscale.com/7001t.htm

I bought mine through www.oldwillknott.com but there are some US and canadian sellers available.

When I was looking for a scale, I wondered what kinds of scales Tom Lehmann and Big Dave recommended for light kitchen use (as opposed to the heavy duty scales that pizza operators use). Tom recommended an Ohaus model, at http://www.globalindustrial.com/gcs/product/productInfo.web?infoParam.mode=1&infoParam.itemKey=30041370. I was able to find a considerably lower price for the recommended Ohaus scale at several other sources (which I found from an online search), and even spoke to a seller about the Ohaus unit Tom recommended, but my recollection is that the unit did not have a tare feature.

Big Dave recommended the Tanita 1144. They currently run around $75, plus any shipping charges. That unit has a tare feature but it was a bit more than I wanted to pay at the time.

It is also a good idea to check eBay. My brother found an inexpensive model there (from a company in Canada) and seems quite happy with it.

In reading Alton Brown's new book entitled "I'm Just Here For More Food" he recommends buying not one but two scales; a Soehnle Futura and a Frieling Accu Balance. The later is very precise and measures to the tenth of a gram, but only handles up to 8 ounces.

At another thread, in response to a recommendation by Snowdy of a digital scale, I mentioned that I have a Sohnle Futura digital scale. As I mentioned to Snowdy, I had bought the unit on the recommendation of someone at this site some time ago. For the weight ranges I use, it is accurate to 0.05 oz. and 1 g. (There is also a higher-priced version of my scale that is very similar to my unit that Cook's Illustrated once rated the top scale of several it tested.) It's a bit of a pain to change to grams (you have to turn the unit upside down, remove a cover, and slide a switch) but I like the unit a lot. I bought it for $59.99 (the lowest price I found for the unit), with free shipping, from jpi-imports, and saw yesterday that the same unit is still for sale at the same price, and still with free shipping, at http://www.jpimall.com/kitchenscales/soehnle_futura.shtml.

I plan to investigate the Frieling unit to see if it offers any additional advantages over the Soehnle Futura.

I purchased a scale yesterday from a local merchant but ended up returning it today because it kept turning off in the middle of measuring and it displayed the weight as a fraction instead of a decimal. I ordered the Soehnle Futura from JPI Imports just now and I can't wait for it to arrive.
