Cheaper replacement for Costco's pecorino romano?

Is there anything that doesn't make a big compromise in taste and it's cheaper than 11.49/lb? That's what Costco wants for their pecorino romano wedge. Great cheese though.

That's a good price, doubt you find a pecorino romano close to that price. If you just want to replace it with something else you could go with a sharp cheddar, but that is just my personal favorite, not at all similar.

I often use grana padano which I assume would be cheaper for you too, but it's certainly different taste. Manchego is pretty good too if you want to stick to a sheep milk cheese, no idea if that's cheaper though

Trader Joe's should have it. You got three locations in Houston.

I have Grana Padano and it's cheaper indeed but not the same taste. We have plenty of Manchego, which is a little cheaper too, thank you.

That's what I generally use. You're not going to beat that price/quality in Houston - I've never seen cheese as good as Costco's pecorino romano at a lower price anyway. You'll pay $16-17/lb at HEB and probably a lot more than that at Kroger or Randall's.

Have you ever tried the Tutta Bella grated romano at Res Depot? They also have a supremo italiano grated parm-romano mix, both of these are way cheaper than the pecorino at Costco but I m afraid they are not nearly as good either. I ll probably end up trying them out, they only come in 5lbs so I ll be stuck with them for a while.

I'm pretty sure that both are domestic garbage cheese.

It's $19/ lb at my Kroger for Murray's. $16 for Locatelli's at HEB.

$11.49 is a good price. And a little goes a long way.

You are correct, I just learned that adding too much pecorino is a no no, it's salty. Yes 11.49/lb is not bad, I am adding probably less than an ounce to a pizza.

Locatelli pecorino romano is $1.57 an ounce here at my local Safeway.  Your price is less than half of the price I am paying here.  Yay inflation!

No Costco around? Or you just prefer the Locatelli?

I wish!  My nearest town only has 9k people, we're limited to Safeway for quality grocery.  Costcos are up in Colorado Springs about 2hr drive.  Maybe one day they'll build one in Pueblo, I'd probably hit that one up since it's only an hour away.

9k is nearing twice the size of my town lol. One hour drive to the nearest major city which has a Costco.

I am surprised that Pueblo doesn't have a costco.  There are at least 8 exits off the interstate which have a high population density.  There is a Sam's club on the north side but Sam's is absolute $hit.  I'm guessing in the next few years there will be one.
