Almost dead in the water

We came into the shop today and found the walk in cooler not cooling.  Luckily it is the end of our week and perishables are in short supply as we have less than $30/week in food waste.  I am waiting on the repair man to come.  Fortunately they can make it out today. We bought it brand new and it is a whopping 2 years old and like so much of todays electronic  commercial restaurant equipment the life span is a joke.  My 25 year old randall prep fridge works like a champ..........   Luckily we saved everything  but 5 lbs of sausage and next week will depend on how soon we can get it fixed.  The good news is we scrubbed the walk in top to bottom with it being empty.  Walter

Repair guy just left.  It was not the compressor and cost under $300.  It is already at temp and for a Sat emergency visit we got out easy

When I was at AIB our maintenance guys installed a simple gadget (I think they got it at Radio Shack at the time) that would monitor the temperature of the cooler as well as the freezer and if the temperature fell outside of the preset range it would automatically send a signal to whatever cell phone number you had it programmed for. That thing saver our bacon more than once!

We had two 8 X 10 walk-in freezers, one 15 X 20 walk-in freezer and two 10 X 20 walk-in coolers (retarders) that we stored materials in for both our various baking classes and our research group so if we lost every thing in any one of them it would put a big hurt on us.

Well, last month our freezer died.... for a unit that is only 4 yrs old it stinks in ice! (we bought it brand new to avoid this problem in the first place -- BTW never buy an "Artic Air")  We are so remote its virtually impossible to find anyone to repair it and our only alternative is to load it on a truck and drive it 3 hrs away to the big city to see if it can be fixed....  In the meantime, we've had to put our frozen food 'off site' Since we're a Mom/Pop shop I had a few bags of frozen fruit for my smoothies I made for lunch or dinner.... that we had to toss.  Fortunately we didn't lose anything for the restaurant... but still?  Plus, our place is so tiny, I wish we could have a walk-in ;-)  Next in line to go on us is the Make-line.... we've replaced everything else except that since we bought the business 7 yrs ago, this unit is still going strong... it just doesn't have wheels and it doesn't drain the condensation to anyplace but the bottom of the unit, so we have to mop the bottom out once a week in winter (twice a week in the Summer).

So, we acutely feel the pains of refrigeration nightmares living in a small town.... and I have encouraged my son to consider getting training in Refrigeration HVAC because there is NOBODY in this whole county who can or will service the equipment without paying double for someone to come here from very, very far away... that way if he does take over our business, he won't have to pay the arm/leg to get anything fixed..... SIGH.

There should be a spot for a pan to slide in there and there may be the liquid also 1/4 to 3/8" somwhere close as it is a hot line and heat the condensate to dry it out is typical if you google the make and model # you may be able to find it I think I have ap icture somewhere I will post if I find it

I ran the metrology dept for a pharma company.  Alarms always went off around 2-3 am.
