Title: Stone, shiny or rough?

I usually bake on 6x6 clay tiles on the bottom of my oven. Someone just gave me a 12x18 piece of I think it's granite. One side is shiny and polished the other is rough. Is it okay to cook on the shiny side or should I use the rough side? I'm kind of nervous about using this; although, it would make it easier than lining up all the smaller tiles. Thanks in advance.

It's not safe to bake on granite. It could shatter when heated.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought I read? Jamie Oliver's favorite stone was a piece of granite. I guess I"ll stick with the tiles!  :(

Thanks, I thought I was reading things. And I was! haha  ;) I guess the issue is safety though. I certainly don't want it shattering and hurting someone. This piece is only 3/8" think which looks to be a bit thinner than recommended.

Perhaps there are some types that are OK, but I still think it is a bad idea particularly with such a thin piece. The other thing to consider is that the polished side is likely coated with some sort of sealer and you have no idea what sort of fumes it will release when heated. It just isn't worth it to try, IMO.
