pizza screens for Canadians?
« on: August 17, 2004, 10:25:24 AM »
Hi folks,

I'm ready to give using the pizza screen concept a shot...but I'm having trouble finding places to get pizza screens here in Canada.  I've looked online and found a bunch of US sites that will ship to Canada, but they all charge an arm and a leg for shipping.  One place wanted $53 dollars!! :0  And the one place that wasn't too expensive, abestkitchen.com, of course doesn't have a 17" pizza screen.  Grrrrr!

Is there any place for a poor Canuck like me to get a 17" pizza screen cheep? :)

Thanks,
Dave

Canadave,

You are right.  I thought I could go online and find all kinds of places that sell pizza screens in Canada.  That may still be true, but there was very little that I could find.

However, I think I found one site that might be of help.  It is at http://www.hendrixequip.com/listing.asp?catid=PZSC. The 17-inch screen is on the second page of the site linked above.

Good luck.

Peter

Canadave:

Happy to see the separate topic. Screens are the one thing I have not changed in a long time in my never-ending endeavors.

Where are you in Canada?  I have a 16" aluminum screen that is sparkling and sits motionless in my overhead space because it is too large for my racks.  It weighs a whopping 6 oz.  I find the Post Office to be cheaper when something weighs under 2 lbs and have a UPS next store as well.  I'd be curious if the shipping cost is any more reasonable and would be happy to check for you.

Even with stones, tiles, etc. in gas ovens, it reduces the mess, simplifies handling, and allows you to work real fast.

Here's a string under N.Y. Pizza dough between Pete-zza and I, with suggestions for screen usage.  Pictures are below: http://www.pizzamaking.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=389;start=msg4518#msg4518

This is a picture of my 14" screen, which is the same as the 16" screen. I never wash it with soap, never use corn meal (it would fall through), never pre-heat it, and it never burns.  When done, I wipe it off and put it away, no mess.

Since there is no lip to prevent cooking, feel comfortable to stretch it to the outer ring.

This puppy is light, and you don't need to worry about fitting it on a circle or messing with vacuums, reducing time in oven and potential burns to you.

It makes for nice pizza; here's a link showing an example from bag to serving pan:

Thanks for the help everybody :)  That hendrixsupply seems like it would work perfectly.  I made a few calls locally here in Edmonton, and supposely the Italian Centre market has some but they're out of stock until next week.  I'll wait a week *sigh* and try to get it from them...if not I'll order online.

Canadave,

Since you are in the Edmonton area, you may want to take a look at some of the restaurant supply companies at http://www.edmonton.servpro.ca/testlist.php?compType=Restaurant%20Equipment%20Supplies&sub=31231&city=Edmonton%20and%20Surrounding%20Area.  Maybe you can find the screens closer to home.
