Travertine? Safe for pizza stone?

I went to a stone yard today and bought a 18"x18"x1" slab of natural travertine.

One side is "polished" but the guy said that as far as he knows it is untreated / unglazed.

When they install the tiles they are supposed to wash them with acetone or something.


Anyway.. what do you guys think? Is this going to poison me or what?

Even if your travertine has some sort of chemical finish it won't poison you. Flip it over to the un-polished side and have at it.

I just put travertine in my bathroom. 6  18inch square tiles left over. I'll be baking on one as soon as we finish the new kitchen floor.

I have a similar question.  I cannot find "Unglazed quarry tiles."  However, I have found this product from lowes.  Is it correct?

Both Lowes & Home Depot have unglazed tiles. I have seen it at both stores. That being said, I have been extremely pleased with the performance of the Fibrament stones. They take longer to heat up but they retain the heat better and bake better. It is worth the extra money to have it over the tiles. After years of replacing tiles I gave up. I have 2 15 inch round Fibraments.
