IIRC, there was a segment of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare where a patron challenged the bill by claiming the food was terrible, even though she cleaned her plate!

IIRC, there was a segment of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare where a patron challenged the bill by claiming the food was terrible, even though she cleaned her plate!

I had a similar dilemma a few weeks ago at what was supposed to be a fairly decent steakhouse. They had a nice selection of bourbon that was only slightly stupidly priced, so I was feeling pretty good by the time the steak arrived. They didn't have the wine I ordered but brought something they said was similar. It wasn't, and I was somewhat focused on my wine disappointment and also really hungry when I tried the steak. The cook was just OK. Their grill didn't have anywhere near enough heat to cook a steak the way I like it, but like I said, I was hungry. The steak was really salty but against the background of bourbon, hunger, and disappointing wine, I got about 3/4 of it down before I just couldn't eat any more because of the excessive salt. The last couple bites were truly terrible; near inedible. I thought about sending it back, but I'd eaten 3/4, so I decided that would be poor form. I think on most any other night I'd have taken one bite and sent it back.

In full-ironic fashion, not only did I pay for it, when the bill came, they charged me a $2 premium per drink for ordering it neat. WTF is up with that? And if that wasn't enough, the wine that was supposed to be similar but wasn't was also 50% more than the bottle I ordered.

I say I'd never go back, but as I sit here typing this and reliving the miserable experience in my mind, I'm envisioning what I'd call "revenge dining" where I go back and make it as miserable and expensive as possible for the restaurant.

No, I really wouldn't do that.

A new trend that's seems to have started in my little town since covid is take-out places prompting for a tip on the POS terminals. I have a big problem with that, I think its just plain rude, how can you ask for a tip before I even know if I have the proper meal in my bag, I refuse to tip in those situations. My question is if you tip, get home and the meal is wrong, not cooked properly ect...do I call the business and request my tip back? About 3 weeks ago this happened, ordered 2 meals, tip was prompted on the terminal (I gave non) and when I got home both my wife & I did not receive gravy for our fries that was ordered and we paid for.

Similar situation here with salty steak at the Steak House in a local casino.  So much seasoning on it, I couldn't eat it.
Very expensive as well. You can't order a meal.  Everything is à la carte.
And the WTF moment... The glasses of water they brought us had lemon squeezed in it and the rind was in the water.
I don't like lemon in water to start with,  and somebody's fingers were on that rind that is now in the water.
Looked around the restaurant, and every other glass of water had the lemon slice on the rim of the glass.

I may give a restaurant a second chance if the service or food is bad but I see promise. For something like that, there will NEVER be a second chance.

That is bizarre, charging extra on a drink.  I thought a typical drink consisted of one shot (1.5 oz) of liquor whether is is neat, on the rocks or with a mix.
Seems to me it would make more sense to just raise the price of the drinks, rather than pi$$ing people off with an unknown added charge.

You've already written the email I would send. If they respond properly then all is good. If they ignore you then off the list for return. I always let management know what's up.

I personally find it more rude you'd dine out in this environment and not tip service staff appropriately. If you're dining out during the pandemic you should be overtipping service staff right now.

Only problem with this is you're not hurting the owner of the restaurant. He's likely not there. You're just making someone working for tips miserable for the night....

Take-out, takeaway, carry out, ready meal, drive-thru, all the same to me.

Places I would categorize as take-out: Subway, KFC, Harvey's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, A&W, Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Mcdonalds...

Without making it specific to kori,  ^^^  I can’t count the money we have spent on tips throughout this pandemic and have been happy to do so. Locally, we did not see any gouging. If anything, places were bending over backwards to keep people safely and affordably fed. Many places had specials for couples, families, etc.; many were priced more like groceries than restaurant meals. On their own web sites or one of many newspaper articles, restaurant owners frequently said the wanted only to keep their people working, pay their rent, survive, and to repay years of customer loyalty in better times.


In small towns like ours, people know each other - and to an extent, each other’s circumstances. To a person, restaurant workers were afraid, brave, and  committed to helping out whoever they could, any way they could. I remember how grateful we were, especially in those first few months, to have variety, quality, and people genuinely caring for each other.


Grocery store workers, delivery services,  and everyone involved in providing medical care worked tirelessly through a national sickness we knew little about at the time to keep others less exposed, safe, and provided for. They are still working hard and risking much and it’s not working out for all of them, unfortunately. In terms of remaining virus free and/or solvent. Once this abates, I will need to live many more years to repay this properly wrt loyalty, recommendations to others, and continued generous tipping.
