Is the Gozney Dome a bust?
« on: September 16, 2021, 03:35:13 PM »
No, I’m sure the company has banked plenty of coin from the pre-release hype. I’m wondering for the end user, the average home pizza person, did the Dome live up to the hype?

Full disclosure; I’ve considered ordering the natural gas version if/when it is released.

Don't think enough people have them yet to answer your question.

Banked enough coin? Did they develop and have manufacturing tooled up for free? I doubt they are anywhere near break even point.

Simple observation, from my window, the buzz has died down. It could be from the lack of units shipped, they did start shipping in June, no?

Breakeven is unknowable but the interest free loans were banked.

Not bashing just wondering.

I used my wife's Facebook to browse the Gozney Dome User group and the people there seemed very happy. Mine's due in December and I'm trying to figure out if I should cancel it or keep it.

Do you know if they are shipping on time? They were/are supposed to offer a natural gas option this month.

I certainly saw pictures of people using natural gas on the Facebook group, so maybe yes.

Hopefully the Dome does become a success. Would be great to see a bigger market and thus more options among the midsized portable ovens now that Pizza Party is out. Though looks like the Dome is more comparable to the Karu 16 or Ooni Pro right now as a premium single pizza oven

Once sales open to the general public the stated price increase puts them into a more competitive space. With the way material prices have increased since April, I think the increase in price will be greater than stated.

I don’t use FaceBook, has anyone baked a successful loaf of bread?

Not too many bread posts, only two found. Not sure how to judge quality.

Looking at all the options the Dome has, I’m sure it will be great in two years once all the attachments are available even with the price increases (steam injector, door, neapolitan arch, etc.). Tom Gozney said they had underestimated demand (preorders) by 3 times somewhere I think so Gozney reaching breakeven soon shouldn’t be a question (minus high volume ptoduction issues).

Found an interesting article on the Facebook group though comparing the oven to the Ooni Pro and Karu 16. They definitely are comparable pizza wise. Gozney rates the Dome’s capacity as a single 16 inch pizza while for the Ooni Pro it is a single 15 inch.

Call me a hater, but the design just doesn't seem good. You get flames from the default gas burner literally shooting out the mouth of the oven. It's really good for trimming your eyebrows...unintentionally.

Looks at 15:20s in this video. This seems completely unacceptable to me - a design flaw.

@peddlingpizzas on Instagram has done a number of loafs, but he keeps on putting them in his IG Stories, so they disappear after 24 hours. They looked good IMO.

You can turn down the dial though, right? And looking at the video, it doesn't seem overly excessive.

I've always liked that I can push my Roccbox a bit more with wood and get flames trickling out the front.

You're probably right...as it was run in that video, looks a bit like a fire hazard to me.

I'm on a group too, and there is A TON of complaining. It's almost embarrassing (for them, not Gozney). I wonder if it's the same group that your wife is part of?

The dual fuel versions are definitely shipping and it seems like some are extremely happy. That said, there have been issues. Shipping delays are widespread and everyone is getting theirs late (mine was supposed to come in September, and now it's in November). They changed the green color to a different shade. There seem to be a whole lot of cracked stones and a handful of other quality control issues that pop up from time to time.

Personally, I'm fine with all of it because at the price I bought mine, nothing compares. When the price goes up, I would expect more reliable delivery and quality control. If that doesn't happen, then yeah, this thing is a bust.

Not like she's a member of a gozney group, I just searched Gozney and "Gozney Dome Users" popped up and so I read it for a bit. I don't consider slow shipping an issue, I do think they should have taken a small deposit and gotten the rest at shipping. Financing on pre-sales is a bit slimy, but done. The broken stons are only an issue if they ignore it and that's still not such a big deal if they sit level. My Ooni has 4 tiles to make up the bottom, so in effect, 4 giant cracks that don't seem to affect anything with the cook.

In these times shipping delays are to be expected and even a color change. What are people’s thoughts on the accessories, door, steamer, etc. are those available or showing up? I still don’t see a natural gas version, I deleted my pre-order email so all I get is the public site.

Thanks for the bread pictures, not too impressed but hard to tell for sure. Back to the door, is that available? Hard to bake bread without it.

Love my Roccbox btw.

Had watched that video and think about flames leaking out before  :-\ Guess that’s why the first batch was cheaper. Once they perfect their production and develop all the accessories in two years though I bet it will be amazing

I spoke to my friend Marco Cappioti who is a pizza oven builder based in India and he mentioned that the dome is too "low and flat". I would agree - the "dome" isn't really a dome. It's really flat on the top so the flame instead of rolling along the top and then arching down like a real dome oven would do, goes flat and eventually escapes out of the front because the burner is at an angle with the flame shooting both sideways and a bit towards the mouth of the oven. When the wind picks up, the flames escaping the oven mouth might gets worse. Let's see if they fix it, I'm not holding my breath.

In a similiar (perhaps slightly higher) price range, the Alfa One Gas seems like a significantly better oven, a true entry level pro oven.

Spent a few hours in the dark whole of the internet watching/searching for Dome videos and comments. What’s apparent to me is I’d be pissed with no accessories available. There is no way you can bake in the Dome with that front opening, I saw no pictures/videos of door in use besides promo pics. I don’t think there is a design flaw, it’s a lack of the Neapolitan Arch being available, that opening is huge without it. Slow roast, bake, steam, cold smoke? I don’t think so, not yet anyways.

That’s a really interesting take .... Read a person comment something similar about the “Dome” design in a Youtube video but thought it was just a one off before.

Really good set of points. Didn’t think about the majority of features missing from the lack of accessories
