My wife wanted to surprise me with some bagels from back home as the ones out here are just hamburger buns with a hole in the middle.  They arrived today.  She spent $100 on them.  They are worse than anything out here which is hard to believe!!  Crumbly white bread with no malt flavor, no malt sheen from boiling and baked on racks of some sort (could tell by bottom of bagel).  just wanted to let others know about this.  What a scam.

Sorry to hear.  There is something special about a real NY bagel,  though some from NJ are quite good as well.

Most likely steamed on racks. Awful method, but a big time saver and money maker. Some old school baking methods exists even out west in Portland and you can find a decent bagel without hit or miss air shipments.

I know they were not made the way I learned and ate them.  We tried Utopia Bagels as well.  Hand rolled and seem to follow old school ways but still a big disapointment.   

This is how I was raised to make/eat bagels.  Does anybody know of a good bagel shop that does traditional NY style and ships out of state?

Southwest Airlines had a $29 one-way fare that ended yesterday. Wonder how many bagels would have fit in one seat? Naturally, the booking bagel would be entitled to overhead bin space and 2 checked suitcases. Uber could have charged to get them to LGA.

It's been a few years since I have bought any so out of date. New seasons market was reselling a local brand that was good but I think they switched. I decided my focaccia was better so I stick with that. Sorry to be of no help.

Kenny and Zuke’s Bagels was pretty good, don't know where they are but the retail shop closed in the NW . Still see frozen ones sold.

I know how to make bagels but with running the pizzeria we are hoping to find a good NYC bagel shop that ships out west.  Once we retire I will make our bagels.
