Sure seems to be a lot of used KA's for sale.
« on: March 03, 2023, 11:02:01 PM »
I was going to bring this up a little while back, not sure if its any different in your areas but there sure seems to be a real lot of KA (mostly) mixers for sale, lots of used but lots of brand new in the box as well, I started noticing this before xmas so its not necessarily unwanted xmas gifts. I was thinking maybe now that the covid thing has settled down, many of the people that got into, or thought they were going to get into pizza/bread making have lost interest and are clearing out their purchases and/or gifts. Not good pricing either, everyone wants close to new pricing.

I don't know that I would ever buy a used mixer, they mostly all look like brand new regardless of how much they've been used and every add of course says "only used a few times" but you really have no way of knowing that.

KA mixers are very fashionable.

I bought my pre-1986 Bosch Universal at a thrift store in 2001. I Don't know the exact manufacture date but the control knob is avocado green. I should really clean and re-lube the transmission some day, and check for worn bearings.

I'd say if you want a KA, maybe hold out for one of the models for which KA says a spiral dough hook is available, because it sounds like the spiral hooks are much better, but the reason most of them come with a C-hook only is because the C hook doesn't try to press up into the gearbox, and the gearboxes in those don't have a thrust bearing to protect them from that pressure.

I'm not actually in the market I was just posting my observations.

I have a KA Classic 4.5Q, I've had that thing for quite a few years now and it sure has had a lot of use. I have a spiral hook I picked it up from Amazon. Depending on batch size, oil percentage, hydration & of course mixing time the spiral hook is no harder on the unit then the C hook IMO. I've been doing 18+ RTF for quite a while now so I mix half as long as I used to, my hydration is been raised to 66%+, 2% oil and a batch size with a total weight of 790-800g that mixer doesn't struggle too much. I've been quite easy on it since I've had it, smaller batch sizes, its never been past speed 2 for mixing dough, and I'll bet its been past speed 2 maybe 3-4 times (long time ago) for whipped cream/cake batter type stuff but I found its easier to just grab the hand mixer for that kinda stuff.

It gets used about 75 times a year, I've never serviced it I'm kinda scared too. If I take it apart I may need parts, idk if I can get parts. I should probably consider looking into a little further, ordering parts that would normally require replacement & watch some youtube vids.

BTW if you "or anyone reading this" have any knowledge on the subject of servicing/rebuilding these things in terms of does & donts, what parts should be replaced if I do decide to rip it apart I'm all ears. I think if I decided to service it and was going to go through the trouble of tearing it down then I would like to just replace parts rather then inspect condition.

There's always talk around the forum here and there about the KA mixers like mine having plastic gears and they dont last long and burn out, but that's all I've seen is talk about it, I havent come across any threads with any members complaining that this has actually happened to them. I dont know, but what I do know is its been a great mixer and served me well to this point and seems to still be going strong.

Only thing I ever did with mine was clean out the old lube and put new food grade lube in. That was after I noticed it dripping into dough. Pretty easy process after watching YouTube video.

I had low end model with plastic gears.

Eventually gave it away to my son.

And this is an option I thought of, pass it along to my daughter and just buy a new one. They sure have climbed in price, $369 not on sale at Walmart and a few other places I've checked on line, got mine for $179 on sale. Hmmm, maybe I wont buy a new one and hope for the best.

You could go the other way and hold out for a pre-whirlpool unit. May need service, should last forever as a hobart product tho.

I've thought about this myself. They're always popping up for dirt cheap on goodwillfinds.com, but the fact that I have 4 mixers already (bosch universal plus, nutrimill artiste, modern KA 4.5qt, generic 6qt bosch clone) has prevented me. I'd love to replace my modern KA, though...

Yeah, under $200 usually.

And then i remind myself that the transmission in my old bosch actually sounds *better than it did 20 years ago. But i should still service it.

I'd love to see pictures of what you do. Mine runs just fine, but it's close to yours in age. Never know when it might need repair.

I have a KA Artisan and would like a spiral dough hook. Do you have a model number for the one you got off Amazon, thanks.

I actually saw a tilt-head kitchenaid in a thrift store today. I didn't bother to look for a price because i want a lift-bowl model at a minimum. Sometimes i wonder if a KA with a spiral hook would be better than my bosch for the small batches i've been doing.

That's exactly why I still own the KA, I have an aftermarket spiral hook and I use it for small batches. If I'm making 4+ doughballs, the Bosch just does a better job and doesn't need to be baby sat.

I picked up a used Zojirushi bread machine for around $100 in 1995. I've never used it to bake bread but it has a cycle that can be programed and I use it to make small batches of dough, under 20 oz of flour. And I don't have to tend it. Start it and 9 minutes later dough is done. It even has a beep function to let me know when to add additions like nuts or seeds.

They're probably refurbished models that had problems, fixed & resold as refurbished to get rid of them. I wouldn't buy any of them!!!! :-\

Kitchenaids look really nice and people love them for that. Some of the other mixers from bosch, etc. are flat out not nice looking.

That being said my bowl lift kitchenaid from costco largely goes unused outside of pizza dough (not sure I even need to use it for that), because it's just too inconvenient to pour ingredients into the tiny gap. I'd rather just use a bowl and a hand mixer any day.

That being said the large whisk does better at whipping egg whites.

The kitchenaid struggles at high hydration like brioche but at least it's better than trying to make it by hand which is not fun.

Yeah, the current incarnation of the Bosch looks like someone used MS Paint to draw new shapes around the same guts as the 1970's version.

I've been seeing tons of them on surplus auctions.  I think demand spiked (covid) and they ramped up production right after demand fell.

KA mixers will not survive long with dough in the 55-65% range.  Someone donated 12 - 6 quart pro mixers to my Special Education Smiling with Hope Bakery program.  We used them for bagels, pizza, cookies, brownies, and such.  They all burnt up within a year. Got a Hobart by then thankfully.  I am using the Bosch at home now.  We had one in the program for 10 years and I brought it to Reno when we opened the pizzeria.  It was used to make dog biscuits and that was a really low hydration dough.  Worked great till I gave it away to a church a few years ago.  Just got a new one and it walked through my pizza and bagel doughs.

Just getting done cleaning out the old grease from the hobart-badged k5ss I picked up for $45 last night.

Grease & gasket kits are $10 on amazon but i spent a little more than that on genuine whirlpool from a local store that is trying to avoid going out of business after 52 years.

Has a steel worm gear that is in perfect condition. Barely any wear on it. 'course, you have to get in there to find that out.

It came without attachments but i bought a bowl, spiral hook, beater, and whisk on ebay for $50 shipped that will be here Saturday.

There's also someone in a geographically inconvenient city offering a Hobart N50 with just the beater and bowl for $220 but it looks like the hook costs another $100 and $320 for some bragging rights and a maximum 4lb batch (per hobart docs) doesn't make sense.

After i have my fun i will deliver the K5SS to a good friend who is mixerless and broke, to use for as long as he pleases. Looks like the max for this machine is also 4lb, roughly. Near as i can tell. Not sure if there's a manual from 1984 on the internet.
