what model of KitchenAid mixer fo you own ?

Hi Guys,

I am wondering what model of Kitchen Aid mixer you own ? ....

My model is the K5SS and is rated at : 260 watts. ( I just read the little label on the side of it )

what's yours ?

I'm thinking of buying the Kitchen Aid Pro 600, it has a wattage of 575 !  - and is a direct gear system, but the price
in Canada is over $1,000 with the taxes ! ( we pay 15% tax here on most stuff )

anyway I would like to see what you all are using for comparison.

Canadianbacon,costco has a pro model with a 450watt motor,5 quarts i believe,all for $399.00.hope that helps.I was offered a KA pro model with a 7 quart capacity and I believe a 575 watt rating for $500.00 at the local restaurant supply.Mind you I know the owner and that price was with my discount,he sells them for $575.00 normally.So check your local restaurant supply store and you might have some luck.

Mark,I have not bought one yet,I am still in the convince the wife mode.I currently use a braun food processor model k600.It is a good unit with electronic speed control.This allows control of the speed which is a nice option.Cost $99.00 at costco,$125.00 at walmart.If you ever come to southern Ontario I can get you a good deal on a unit,I have a few restaurant supply stores as sponsors for our bbq team.Its nice to get a discount on stuff.You should take a look at this site www.cayneshousewares.com they have some good sales.

Thanks for that offer, I may take you up on it.  I'll be at the big BBQ competiton this summer, so I guess I'll get to meet you,
I'm going to be brinking my "Get Spun" beer.  Probabally 10 gallons of it, Mike is going to make me up
a logo for the keg, and or bottles hehehe. 

I want to see some good BBQ stuff... have never seen a real comp in my life.  Will bring my camera and will bring laptop also
so I can unload my images.  I only have a 512 meg card, and I know I'll probabally take a good thousand images.  Oh and then video,
for a DVD, need to do that also, oh it's going to be fun ! whooo !

If you are looking to purchase a new mixer, you should not only check the wattage but also find out how much power the motor has.(maybe a hp rating) From what I've been told, the wattage is what the motor uses but it still doesn't mean that the motor is strong. This is only what I've been told, but I guess it does make sense.

I have a KitchenAid UltraPower 300 watt unit, but I also have a Cuisinart food processor that I prefer for dough ball weights of up to about 25 ounces (beyond that I use the KitchenAid mixer). I have also used a Braun variable-speed processor on several occasions at a friend's home and I agree with Aaron that it is a good machine--and a good, lower-cost alternative to the more expensive stand mixers.

A couple of other places to keep in mind for stand mixers is eBay and Amazon. Amazon sells reconditioned and slightly impaired (usually scratched) KitchenAid stand mixers at prices often substantially below the normal retail prices. There is a risk in buying a machine that you haven't personally examined but since Amazon is big on customer service and satisfaction, I think the risk may not be all that great. It would me more the "hassle" factor if you aren't satisfied and have to return a unit. Mixers and food processors are also often available on eBay, in many cases in-the-box units. The key factor is to get the amount of power (or cup capacity in the case of a food processor) you think you should have.

Mark,I look forward to seeing you there.I will be cooking with Mike this season as the Dizzy Pig competition team.We are looking in to doing a comp in Michigan also,along with various outings in Ontario.10 gallons of beer wont last long around a seasoned bbq crew,Mike is about six three and i am six seven(inches tall)so there is a lot of empty leg room.
Jag a note on horse power,1hp =750 watts.That is my understanding of the ratings.

I can second this.  I bought a VERY expensive Delonghi mixer that is 800 watts, with a 7-quart bowl.  Sounds great, right?  Well, it's okay, but I'm not exactly thrilled.  If I try to mix enough dough for three pizzas (I guess that'd be around 3 lbs), the motor tends to cut out quickly (a built-in safety measure that cannot be overridden) because it starts to overheat.

One of our recent members mentioned the Electrolux DLX that he uses.  I had a look at it online, and it looks terrific.  If I had to do it all over again I'd get one of those.

You do have a good point there..... with the most expensive KA mixer ( Kitchen Aid ) it's a darn pretty penny, and for some more money
I could get the DLX.

On the mixer group (yahoo group ) that Jeff ( the guy with the DLX machine ) told us about, a guy living in Canada ordered it
from the States to Canada, I think he lives in Alberta, or Manitoba.

He loves it and says it's very powerful.  Anyway so there's at least one company I know that will ship it up here.

Read what the person say about the DLX.  This the most powerful KA cannot do....

I have the Electrolux DLX and love it.  I once tried using 21 cups
of whole wheat flour (about 7 or 8 loaves worth of bread) just to
see if it could handle the load, and the machine had no trouble at
all (prior to my DLX I had a Kitchen Aid, but decided to sell it
after trying to make a two loaf whole grain recipe and having the
machine struggle a great deal)

The DLX has only 450 watts, but you will never miss not having 1000
watts.  This machine is very strong and able to handle about
anything.  It is much more powerful than my Kitchen Aid ever was and
doesn't strain or struggle at all, no matter what I mix.  Apparently
the way the watts are converted into working energy is more
efficient in the design.  There is some discussion about wattage in
previous posts if you read the archives.

If you look into the DLX you should consider the blender too.  It
does an outstanding job and you will never have a problem with motor
burn out because the DLX powers it.

With a big family like yours, I would consider the DLX or the
Bosch.  With either machine you can easily make 6 loaves of bread at
a time (the most you can fit into an oven).

I have never used a Bosch, but all the owners here on the list seem
to love theirs.  Like the DLX, their design makes them very
efficient and able to handle very large loads easily (vs. a Kitchen
Aid type design)

Look through the archives and you will get a lot of very useful
information regarding both machines.

You should call some of the dealers and they can give you more
information.  I purchased my DLX and grinder from Giselle at
www.mountaintopsmilling.com.  She sells and uses both brands so she
can give you advice as to what may be better for your family. I
think in some posts she mentioned that she has also tried the
Viking, so she could give you a comparision with that too
