  • I was on a road trip with the family last week and we stopped at a place called Ron Don's in the Finger Lakes area of New York (Trumansburg).

I was going to get a turkey club and the waitress asked if I wanted it as a sandwich or as a squeeze. Not knowing what it was, I went with the squeeze.

Turns out a squeeze is a small, only cheese pizza used as the bread in a sandwich. It was pretty good with a turkey club. I though a homemade version would be even better.

So, I had two small dough balls to try. I started with a combo off the menu that I didn't try. Mozzarella and cheddar on a small pizza. When it was just about done, I put on some chopped beef and bacon and domed it in the oven. Cut it in half, added lettuce and tomato and then cut it again in thirds for the 3 people here.

Pretty tasty sandwich. Made another that was pretty much the same plus mushrooms and a little extra cheese one the beef. Will definitely make these again some time.

  • Sounds like that Papadia sandwich Papa Johns is trying to sell. I like the Turkey club idea, but i would pass on anything that resembles a folded pizza.

  • It may resemble a folded pizza, but it is definitely cut. I'd say closer to a fresh flatbread. Left the dough thicker than I would have for a pizza. I patted the dough ball out more than stretch. Definitely skipped the edge stretch going for an even thickness.

One thing I do regularly with a leftover dough ball is stretch it into a log and bake it off as a quick loaf to go with dinner. Similar to a piece of that.

  • Reminds me of a pressed focaccia sandwich I got at an Italian deli shop here in the Twin Cities. One of the best sandwiches I ever had!!!
