Outside of Detroit style which is an obvious given the Detroit pizza scene is nearly a ghost town considering what a huge area Metro Detroit really is.  There is no literally  Neapolitan, only a couple New York places worth a darn, and one good coal oven place.

C'mon!  Everyone knows that LA is the pizza capital of the world!
Things have never been more like today than they are right now.

With the current state of commercial pizza in the USA, NYC included, often the best pizza town in the country is you home baked pizza :)  Walter

The criteria they used doesn't make much sense, so it is what it is. Cost of living would obviously hurt NYC. And yelp ratings in each area may just reflect who likes to complain more  :)

Most of these are meaningless. What I can attest to is that the people in SE Michigan are a pizza loving bunch! I think that with Dominos, Jets, Little Caesars, Buddy's and a ton of smaller chains and independents all having started here says something about our pizza culture.

I agree with this, and with your first post. I wouldn't have picked Detroit as as being in the top 10 of just the cities I have visited. I'm sure my criteria must differ from the folks that put the ranking together. They are SmartAsset whereas I am only a smartass.  ;D

If cost of living were included NYC would have been on top.

The DS photo in the article sure looks good!

PMQ magazine has weighed in on this subject also:

http://www.pmq.com/September-2017/This-City-is-the-No-1-Town-for-Pizza-Loversand-Its-Not-New-York-Or-Chicago/

Peter

I find these ratings highly questionable.  New Haven pizza isn't even in the top 25.  And their rationale for ranking Chicago #43 makes no sense:

“Well, according to our data, Yelpers are harsh critics when it comes to Chicago deep-dish. The Windy City scored poorly in both of our quality-of-pizza metrics. One could argue that Chicago residents simply have higher standards for pizza, which is reflected in their harsher Yelp reviews. That’s certainly a possibility.”

Seems their rankings are based on wildly subjective impressions by Yelp users.  It's a mistake to judge Chicago pizza based solely on deep dish.
Despite being famous for it, deep dish is far less frequently consumed by Chicagoans than other styles of pizza.  As a native Chicagoan, the myriad of pizza styles available here is what makes our pizza scene so interesting.  There's tavern style thin crust, bakery and Sicilian style thick crust, buttercrust pizza, malt crust pizza, Neopolitan pizza, New Haven style coal oven pizza, etc.

Also surprising is how so many of the top cities are based in Arizona.   ???

I don't think this is a 'Best Pizza' study (as much as I'd like to argue for Detroit Style).  I think it's more like 'pizza places per capita' + 'some sort of satisfaction rating derived from Yelp'.

Here's another pizza city list that didn't make sense to me.

https://www.phillybite.com/index.php/travel/66-guide/542-philly-ranked-at-top-pizza-city-in-america

Makes perfect sense to me.  The website is phillybite.com.  The author is PhillyBite or PhillyBite Staff Writer.

I noticed that too, but you can still bump yourself to the top and have the rest of the list be better.
