Roma Pizza Asbury, NJ
« on: January 24, 2022, 10:10:52 AM »
My oldest daughter and I took a quick trip to Staten Island two Saturdays ago.  On the way back we stopped at a BP gas station to get gas.  I went inside to use the restroom and much to my surprise there was a pizzeria on the other side of the gas station right along the busy highway, where you have to get off to get gas.

Went over to look at the pizza's and they looked good and thin.  The garlic knots also looked delicious.  Ordered two pepperoni slices, one for my daughter and one for me.  Also ordered the garlic knots.  The plain pizza then had pepperoni added and the slices were put into the oven to finish the bake.  The crust and bottom crust just had the right amount of crisp for me.  The garlic knots were also very good.  Ordered two more pepperoni slices to take home.

Never would have thought to go there and try their pizza's, but most of what I could see was the balances of all toppings were good. The dough balls looked like they were fermented well.

Talked to the owner for awhile and his day had owned other pizzeria's in the area and restaurants.  He dad recently retired, but is still helping at the pizzeria.

I like how thin the crust was.  In our area can't find any pizza's with a nice thin crust.  Looks like they use Stanislaus tomato products.  Cheese tasted like Grande and they put some kind of powdered cheese on top of the sauce before the shredded mozzarella.  I wish I would have gotten a slice of their grandma pizza too.  They use a par bake for the crust and the balance of toppings looked good.

If I get that way again, will be sure to stop in and try their pizza's and other foods.

Hi scott r,

Nice to hear from you!  :)  Would like to know what you think, if you stop by some day.  I don't get out that much to try pizza anymore, but would love to be able to make those garlic knots in my home oven.   :-D  Tasted like fresh garlic and good cheese sprinkled on the knots.  Tried some pizza's around our area and they always have thick tasteless crusts and the crusts aren't crispy at all.  Would have stopped somewhere in Staten Island for pizza, but it takes awhile to get there and to come home in one day.  My daughter was driving and she wanted to get home before it got late at night.  At least I got some good pizza!  :-D

Yes, good pizza is great news!!     I was at Goodfellas in Staten Island fairly recently and I thought the pizza was really good.   Its not quite a NY style pizza because they bake it faster, but its not quite Neapolitan either because its not that fast.   Its actually closer to a razza style pizza.   Some day if you get a chance you should try it (or razza!).   Both are thin.

I have always wanted to stop at Goodfellas, but never got there.  Thanks for telling me it was really good.  I thought I wanted to go to Joe and Pat's, but my daughter wanted to get home.  Will try razza too some day if I get up there again.

Thanks,

Norma

Great to see you too Matt!   :)  How are your pizza adventures doing? Yes, tasted to me like good NY style pizza, or at least in my opinion.   :-D  Liked how they had those screens under the pies on the pizza trays.  Don't think I ever saw that before.  Nice 18" pizza's.  Yea, would like to know how they make their garlic knots.  They almost melted in my mouth when eaten.  Like they were light and fluffy.

If you scroll down in the below link (on the left) more can be seen.

Thanks Norma, my pizza adventure continues to be fun and keeps me busy!

There's actually a very recent thread on garlic knots. Below is a link to Lou's post where he describes a typical process. He also mentions that he likes them barely cooked through. Maybe that's part of the light and fluffy component you noticed.

Matt,

Great to hear your pizza adventures continue and are fun!  ;D

Thanks so much for Lou's post where he describes a typical process for knots. :)  Yes, maybe because he likes them barely cooked though might be the light and fluffy component I noticed.

indeed, it is good to hear from you norma! I would have a hard time not stopping for pizza on staten island, even if it was takeout to eat in the car. one of life's regrets will always be not making to the market for your pizza so I'm determined to not let great pizza opportunities pass me by!

we've been semi-homeless for the last 6 months, sold our house, sold our apt and waiting to close on a new place, haven't baked a ny pie in ages! hopefully mar 1 we'll move into our new place and I'll see what the oven looks like there.

be well!

Jeff, this sounds a little crazy, but maybe a little fun too? (minus the lack of home pizza)   I hope so!  I cant thank you enough for the pizza party oven hookup.  I got really lucky with whats going on in your life!

OD,

Great to hear from you too!  Maybe if I would have been the one driving, we might have stopped for pizza in Staten Island, but I won't drive there anymore.  Getting to old for all of that traffic.   :-D  Also it was just a quick trip to take things up to my daughter and family that were living in Staten Island, but now they are in Brooklyn.  Will be making more trips to Brooklyn now.  Have been to great pizzeria's in Staten Island, but surely not all of them.

Sorry to hear you are homeless, but hope your really enjoy your new place when you get there.  I haven't been making any pizza's either.  Can't decide if I want to get the little Blodgett hooked up in my shed, or wait.  Might be moving to Florida in 2 years.

scott, it has been tough to dig out of 20 years of living but as you say, it has been fun too! this week we head to new orleans, then nashville, and then wherever the road take us. i cant think of anyone id rather have our pizza party and the financial loss was more than offset by meeting you for lunch at sallys!

best,
jeff

Jack,

It would take more than just hooking it up.  Shed needs cleaned out, would need a decent size propane tank an I it would need vented though roof of shed.  Need a heavy stainless steel table to put the oven on too. A photo of the shed and a photo of the Blodgett.
