Americans are ages ahead of us in terms of marketing strategy, so I feel a little embarrassed in responding you. These tips may not be the state of the art or what the top companies would have designed for next campaign but I believe some of them are always valid.

Before the opening: leaflets and posters, but above all a sign that make the public notice the presence of something new. You put it there to attract the curious, so do not be surprised if lots of people will feel entitled to inform themselves a bit…
Opening: inauguration, perhaps with free tastings. If you have put aside some surprises set a timetable.
In progress: endless opportunities of choice. From small brochure or normal leaflets where you let people know the different types of pizza and their cost, your telephone number and all the information you wish to give finishing with a website made by experts, so that you can always be reached by anyone.

If you’re after some more ordinary ideas, you can take a look at my blog: http://www.dipizzaepizzerie.com/index.php/marketing/
In case you do, don’t forget to tell me what you think. I’m open to any criticism.

And make sure to get out and "own" that town. You should, and I say you would be an idiot not to, know virtually every single shop owner around your shop on a first name basis. Right now you should be visiting their stores, getting to know their business, letting them know about your shop and supporting them when you can. Take a genuine interest and ask lots of questions about their business before spouting off about yours. And that should continue once you open as well.

Know all the movers and shakers in that town. Are there any bloggers who are followed a lot in your area? Preempt any potential bad reviews by inviting them to a pre-opening tasting to try and get them on your good side. Dittos for any local rags that could potentially damage you with a bad review. Not saying such treatment guarantees protection from a bad review, but it can't hurt.

Know that community and become part of it, if you haven't already. Good will and communal support is nice to have.

A lot of nice flyers and advertisements in papers and magazines are nice and, possibly needed.....but nothing can beat an enthusiastic recommendation by a person in the area. --K
