Spiral Dough Hook for KitchenAid Artisan?

Mine is about five years old. I gave my C-hook model away when I bought it. To me there is no comparison, the spiral works great and does not seem to stress the machine at all.

What is it about the factory c-hook that is so undesirable? I have the KA Classic 4.5q and am happy with how it performs however, I have never used any other type or brand of mixer.

My main gripe with the C-hook is that, as I make small batches of dough (500g of flour), the dough eventually just gets carried around by the hook. I think it's a design flaw that is inherent to the shape itself. If you wanted to create a hook to catch the dough, you would probably use a C-shape, right? I suspect this does not happen as much with larger quantities, as the weight of the dough probably brings it back down the hook.
For spiral hooks, however, the very shape of them pushes the dough down and kneads more efficiently.

I'd recommend a KA with the spiral dough hook as the dough does not creep up the hook on those.

I agree with Hans. The dough shield allows an older C-hook KA to work as well as a spiral on larger batches but the spiral still greatly outperforms on small batches like 1-3 balls, if you ever need that capability. I don't, so it's not a big deal to me. If you don't and you find a great deal on an older C-hook KA, it's worth considering now that we have the dough shield.
