Sauce tip for those in Ontario - Longo's
« on: January 20, 2013, 10:18:26 AM »
I had been looking for cans of pulp that would make fast sauce.  Couldn't find 6 in 1 anywhere.

Discovered Longo's has a product called Polpa Finely Chopped Tomato pulp.  Has a pop top and I just strain a tiny bit of water out and its good to go.  Perfect size (400 g) for two pies.

I haven't explored the Canadian canned tomato offerings, but since I vacation on the St. Lawrence perhaps I will this summer. Canada grows lots of very good tomatoes and Southern Ontario's climate is condusive to very good yield. A few years back, Serious Eats SLICE page did a taste test of canned whole tomatoes and their winner was some Canadian grown tomatoes packaged by Luigi Vitelli. I have never been able to find the same tomatoes, must of that companies tomatoes are labeled as Italian grown, but a search in Ontario could lead to some interesting finds. Will keep an eye open for Longo's

We buy tomatoes every year and prepare both sauce and peeled whole tomatoes for canning. Availability of retail products will vary depending on location. In Toronto, where I live, you can pretty much find most brands.
