Is it necessary to use fresh yeast?

The majority of recipes I've seen call for fresh yeast, but is ADY or IDY as effective? Is the taste different? Just curious. Thanks in advance!

Chaz, I suggest that you try all three and see what you think. I started with ADY, went to IDY and tried fresh caked yeast. Fresh yeast worked ok as long as it was FRESH. I didn't appreciate a better taste. I like IDY due to  ease of use. A Recent class I took suggests that ADY is more consistent than IDY. I did not see that but I bake on average one pie per week. Not a big sample size.
