cob oven build - fire clay
« on: March 10, 2014, 09:07:57 PM »
I am in the planning stages of building a 36" clay oven. If i'm mixing sand to fire clay at around 3 to 1, how much fire clay do you guys think i'll need? I've found a supplier selling 50lb bags about 3 hours from me, still searching for someone closer.

I hope you have already read this book, Build Your Own Earth Oven by Kiko Denzer as it is the bible for building one. I participated in an earth oven building course based on this book as a guide. The clay came right from the ground on site. Clay is abundant. I'm not sure what may be in your locality but it could be right in your back yard.

This is the earth oven I participated in building in a class.

Fire clay is not the kind of clay you want for a cob oven, although you can add some to the right clay to enhance the refractory properties.
