Official Definition of a Calzone?

I found myself arguing with a friend over the official definition of a Calzone today!  In western PA all calzones have the sauce on the inside, but in central PA they keep it out.

Can anyone end this argument for us? We've searched the web and found many recipes supporting both techniques.

What's the official definition of a calzone? Is it distinguished from a stromboli by where the sauce is placed?

One distinguishable difference between the two are that a Calzone is folded over and crimped closed like a Micky's Fruit pie. A Stromboli is more along the lines of a roll or stuffed small loaf open on the ends.

As to the sauce I have heard different opinions on if either has any in them or just on them.
Personally my Calzones have sauce in them, Stromboli I have never made but eaten and that had the sauce on top and none in.
I sure someone else probably knows the definative definition.

My personal and limited experiense is.

Neither have sauce in them.

The Calzones were served with the sauce on the side, the Stromboli with sauce over them.

Take it for what it is worth.
