Hello all,

Looking for suggestions for Farmers Markets in the area that will have the best tomatoes. I am looking for a large variety of shapes and colors of tomatoes - I want them to be full of flavor, not super watery, and as ripe as a water balloon that's about to burst. This is for a caprese salad (http://www.seriouseats.com/2015/08/how-to-not-f..k-up-a-caprese-salad.html), and plan on using some good tomatoes for a homemade roasted tomato sauce for some pizzas I plan to make on Friday.

Also looking for suggestions on local dairies. The only one I could find is Houston Dairy Maids.

Thank you in advance.

Ben

I don't know that I'd call Houston Dairy Maids a dairy. I don't know if they actually make any cheese. Maybe. Nonetheless, it's a great shop for cheese and specialty food though a bit pricy.

There is a big farmer's market just down the road a few blocks from Houston Dairy Maids. I'm not sure how much locally-grown produce you'll find there though. I think it's pretty much all stuff shipped from who knows where.

Central Market at Westheimer and Weslayan often has good produce and a nice selection of tomatoes.

Why not consider growing your own.

Urban Harvest used to have some good tomatoes, I have not been there in a long time so I do not know if they still have some vendors with local tomatoes. They have a company call Lira, the guy makes mozzarella and some other cheeses. Very good but expensive.

Other than rice there isn't a whole lot farmed around here for human consumption .

I would but my dogs would destroy anything I try to grow. Once they are gone, I am planning on it.

Oh you know what I've actually looked there and didn't see anything worth getting. The one downtown is mostly food trucks.

So I am thinking HEB Central Market on Westheimer is the best bet for anything.

They have been carrying plenty of Vermont Smoke n Cure, Fresh Mozzerella that I used last week and was amazing, and an excellent selection of produce that you cant go wrong with.
