Chefboyardee Pepperoni??
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:13:58 AM »
Anyone else have fond childhood memories of those pepperoni pizzas made from the box. The pepperoni were small, round and came already mixed in the sauce in an aluminum can.  I always loved the flavor of those pepperoni. Id be curious to see how they would taste on a good dough and sauce. Is this crazy idea, lol? Impossible to aquire, lol?

I don't think it will taste good, sure Chefboyardee was edible as a child but as an adult it isn't palatable to me.

In stock down in my neck of the woods....

I can get the kits. I was wondering about getting just the pepperoni.  In the kit the pepperoni slices come already in the sauce.

The Chef Boyardee factory is still in Milton, Pennsylvania. The issue here is whether or not Conagra uses a special pepperoni. Remember, that pepperoni and sauce mixture has to be run through an industrial canning cooker. Even if they used garden variety foodservice pepperoni, it will still taste different than any other kind of pepperoni due to it being cooked and marinated in pizza sauce.

As Mmmpf noted, those kits are still sold. Now, I don't know if they changed the formula of that canned sauce and pepperoni mixture, but lets say they didn't. The only way to get that pepperoni is to buy the kits (their plain pizza sauce has cheese in it, so it is a different product) and discard the sauce, just keeping the pepperoni from the sauce mixture can.

Home canning pizza sauce with something like Hormel pepperoni from the supermarket may yield something close to what Conagra is making in Milton.

Made it once in Home-Econ. class, in middle school.

Was hungry, so it was good, at the time.

Probably much less so, now.
