Sauce was lousy

I made a so called killer sauce that was posted on the web, I made it 3 times the first was good a plum tomatoe I ground up, the second time was with 6-1 didn't care for it too thick, and then yesterday I used a can of LaValle Italian peeled tomatoes that I ran thru my boat motor hand held blender, this was the recipe

1  28 can of tomatoes
2 table spoon olive oil
2 clove garlic chopped fine and simmered in the oil lightly
1 tsp basil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp ground fennel
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp marjoram

  any idea why the last 2 times were not the best flavor, I have to find another sauce recipe, my kids were saying the sauce lately was not up to par.

ps the only difference is the first recipe was a fennel seed I had in the cubboard that I ground up myself, since then I found ground fennel and have been using that.
